Designers Making An Impact

Though the early political movements of the 1960s and 1970s sparked nationwide interest in the fight for gender equality, it’s really only within the last ten years that the problem of gender discrimination in the design field has been measured.

Through surveys, interviews, census counts and much more, the following organizations have empowered female designers around the world.

The 3% Movement is an organization that was founded by Kat Gordon in 2013, when it was discovered that women only made up 3% of creative director roles. Through a mix of content, community and professional development, the 3% Movement has helped raise the number of female creative directors, while giving agencies a clear road map of ways to champion female creative talent and leadership.

AIGA Women Lead is committed to empowering women in design and advancing the vital discourse on issues facing professional women today without generalizing or segregating women designers. The organization aims to address persistent biases and inequities inclusively and constructively through programming around three goals.

Kerning the Gap is a community in the UK that Nat Maher started in 2015, aimed at getting more women into leadership roles within the design industry. For several years she had been noticing less and less women at the tables she sat at, and she began asking herself the question “where have all the women gone…?”.

Women Who Design is a Twitter directory of accomplished women in the design industry. It aims to help people find notable and relevant voices to follow on Twitter by parsing Twitter bios for popular keywords.
